2011 - Question 5

What should our bill on health care look like?

  1. I believe that our health care bill should be fair to everybody that is a legal citizen of the U.S. and take into consideration people’s wages and their circumstances. Our healthcare bill needs to have certain limitations, set by the government, to the prices that insurance companies can charge and who they can accept.

  2. I think the format of the health bill should be fair to everyone. I think the rising of taxes on Medicare and Medicaid should be lowered to help the the elderly and poor people in their situation. It think life insurance company should be able to deny people if their insurance rates are bad.

  3. I think that the government should provide general healthcare for all citizens. This means that the government would provide for all citizens general health care like yearly check-ups and stuff like that. Everyone would pay taxes to help fund the government-run health care system. I believe this makes sense because with the situation we are in now, those with a higher income end up paying for those with a lower income, who cannot pay their health care costs, anyway. This happens because those who cannot pay end up receiving services anyway, and because the insurance companies are paying for this through Medicaid and other programs, they jack up their costs to cover the difference. So those with more money pay more on their premiums. If all citizens paid taxes it would be the same type of deal, but more equally spread. If people would like more coverage than what the government offered, they could receive surplus insurance from private companies. If the government provided general healthcare for all citizens, people with pre-existing conditions could still get care. Another thing that the government run healthcare system does is provide for those who are poor. Having the government provide healthcare for all citizens provides insurance for the elderly, and takes the pressure off of employers to provide insurance for their employees. Another detail is that the government offered healthcare would have a cap. What I mean by this is that there would be a limit to the healthcare that each individual receives. This makes sense because if the government paid for absolutely everything health care related, taxes would go through the roof. To try and keep the costs under control for citizens, there would be a cap. Like I said before, if people wanted more coverage than what the government offered, private insurers would provide this.

  4. The United States health care bill is a highly disused topic. I believe that both Medicare and Medicaid should be included in the bill. I think that more money should go toward Medicare. I believe that since the older population is retired we need to take care of them by providing them with health insurance. But, I think the age that someone can be able to receive Medicare should change due to the life expectancy increase. Due to the bad economy and lack of job security, I also think that Medicaid should be provided to the very low income families. Extra measures need to be taken to ensure that this program does not get taken advantage of. A new job could be set up to do extensive background checks of enrollees. I believe that people should not be required to get health insurance. If they want it and cannot receive it, I think that the government should help them out. I also believe that insurance companies should not be able to turn individuals down because of preexisting conditions. Many illnesses cannot be prevented so people should be able to receive help. But, I think a small fine could be added to their plan to help cover the costs.

  5. The United States healthcare bill right now is okay. This is something that needs to improve especially because of the rapidly rising healthcare costs. These healthcare plans are putting some businesses in very stressful situations because the employers want to provide health insurance but it costs so much and is being more costly. I agree with Hugh Jass and Ivan Oder that the healthcare system should be fair to everyone. In being fair to everyone I think that the healthcare system should have everyone pay a certain percentage of their income, but the retired and disabled should have a small percentage of their overall amount of money because they have no income. If someone would have no money or income then they will have a percentage of their welfare check taken out for their healthcare.

  6. I agree with Hugh Jass. I believe that the government should make it easier for the elderly people to get Medicare and Medicaid. I also think that people should get taxes on health care based upon their income rate so that it is truly fair. While I do agree that everyone has a right to welfare, I believe that if they are taking advantage of the system, they should lose this right. If a person is an illegal immigrant or they have no job and do not try to get one, then they should not get free healthcare. There should be more enforcement upon the distributors of Medicare and Medicaid.

  7. The health care bill is good for supporting low income families because it helps them pay for medical costs, but some changes should be made to it in order to accompany the lengthened life expectancy of people. Because the average life expectancy is increasing, the government needs to pay for the health needs of elderly Americans way longer than they have in the past decade. This needs to change because the United States is in extreme debt. In order to cover these costs, and also costs for developing medical technology, there will be more taxes. An example of this is the tanning tax. I agree with Saleprice that the age that people receive health care should change because people are just simply living longer. The government has to spend way more than they receive from the healthcare package and this leads to increased debt.

  8. Ricky makes a good point when wanting to help those who are legal U.S. citizens, and wanting to help those with financial problems. The people in the U.S., who are legal, do have more of a right when it comes to receiving help. Those who are here illegally cause a little burden because they are not actually here as an actual citizen, so why is it our need to provide to them? Isn’t that more money being forced out on our part? In my opinion I feel those who are here legally have already deserved the right if needed to receive benefits in health care. For the elderly people here I think we have a responsibility to help care for them. They are having to take tons of pills a day and throughout a week that really adds up, and so does their bill. How is a person who has retired supposed to care for their medical needs as well? Benefits like financial help or sales should be given to elderly in need of the help. And people with certain illnesses that require a lot of medical attention should receive the same benefits. In the U.S. wouldn’t we want to keep our people living long? If they can’t keep up with the cost of care, how can we survive long? Take that into consideration we you think about the health care.

  9. The U.S. government needs to reform the healthcare system by strictly monitoring the system to prevent fraud, helping mainly the low-income citizens or those who can’t get healthcare any other way, and keeping tabs on the healthcare companies to keep them from raising healthcare costs too high. I agree with Saleprice that actions need to be taken to keep the healthcare programs like Medicare and Medicaid from getting taken advantage of. Also, people using these programs should be required to pay what they can afford and not get care for free, just so they don’t use it frivolously, and they know that it actually does cost something. The government needs to help provide healthcare to those who want it but can’t get it (like Medicaid for low-income people), and they need to help elderly people with programs like Medicare, because these people have been paying into the healthcare system for all the years they’ve been getting paychecks, and they deserve the help. The government also needs to keep tabs on the healthcare companies to keep them from raising the healthcare costs to unaffordable levels, and the healthcare companies shouldn’t be able to turn people away for having pre-existing conditions or deny them treatment.

  10. I believe that health care should only be available to those who can afford it. The government should not have to increase our national debt by helping those who don’t make enough to pay for the services. Illegal immigrants should not be able to use the health care benefits. Only people on their own plans or employers plan can use the health care system. The government should control the power of the health care system so no company can monopolize the system. I agree with Grace about preventing the abuse of the health care system.

  11. I don’t believe government health care is a good idea. In a perfect world, government provided health care would be a major benefit. It would cover those people who are poor, or who can’t get insurance elsewhere. But our world is messed up, and the government would not be able to manage health care very well. I agree with Grace that the government would have to keep fraud out of the system, but I don’t think that the government would be able to do that. I feel the government would also take advantage of having control over yet another part of our lives. Government health care would also cost an extreme amount of money for ineffective services. It would also push out the private insurance agencies and even doctors because they couldn’t afford competing with government health care. This future health care bill is also scaring the insurance companies to raise their prices. If the government would repeal these changes, the costs would drop again.

Instead of government provided health care, I believe it should be the work of the citizens, churches, and other non-profit organizations to care for the sick, poor and elderly. I don’t believe that the government should take this upon themselves. They have enough trouble controlling what they have now. The old form of Medicare and Medicaid should also be changed so that people can’t take advantage of the system.

  12. I think that our health care bill should be fair for everyone. I think that we should put the prices of health care low for the poor people and high for the rich people. I also think that we need to also have the government pay for the people who can’t even afford to pay it. I agree with Ivan Oder because we should have a set limitation so that it does not get out of hand. I do not agree with 3 6 mafia when he says that it should only be available to the people who can afford it because everyone deserves to be covered even if they can’t afford it.

  13. Government health care does not seem like the path we should be taking. I certainly agree with Z Joker. It seems at first like the government is doing a good deed helping those who cannot afford to pay their debts. The fact is that we end up helping pay for the people who get the benifits. Some of these people include: elderly people on medicare or people who have certain health conditions. It is good for these people, but it hurts people like us. Another thing is that the drug companies have a contract with the government to help the cost of the health care bill. This does not allow generic drugs to be imported from other countries. This means we would have to pay more for the name brand drugs because the drug companies in the U.S. have monopolies. Joker also makes a good point that the government will also abuse this bill. An example could be that we end up paying for the health care of illegals. I believe this bill is a bad idea and we should not even have it.
