2011 - Question 4

What should our national policy toward the environment be?

15 comments:

  1. Since the United States is one of the richest countries in the world. I think if we take responsibility for our actions (cost for reducing our greenhouse gas)other nations will agree to do the same. If we can come to an agreement with how much each country is willing to reduce there emission costs. We need to agree to use things such as replacing some of our coal-fired power plants, with natural gas and hydroelectric and wind powered, maybe even solar. And since our nation signed the Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992. We need to hold up on our end of the deal by reducing our emissions as soon as possible. In order to help other nations reduce their own.

  2. I agree with BIG BOI. If the United States takes responsiblility for the harm they incur, then other nations will do the same. As a nation, we should enforce rules and regulations that pertain to matters of the environment. We should regulate the amount of pollution that we emit. I think that we should also put special regulations on businesses that use and produce pollutants that affect our environment.
Right now, the United States is producing 1.53 billion tons of carbon emissions. If we cut back on the use of pollutants such as carbon, and plant more trees, then we will be able to effectively reduce the amount of pollutants emitted, which is good, in the long run. We should also look into using renewable fuels, and we should start to use more fuel efficient vehicles.

  3. God has called us to have dominion over His earth, and I think we should do this responsibly. I believe we can do this responsibly by taking care of the plants, animals, and natural resources this planet has. Taking care to not overuse resources, and trying to find cleaner ways to provide energy are two ways we can improve our care of the earth. I agree with Big Boi that we should start to develop things like wind power, solar power, and nuclear power to become less reliant on fossil fuels. Another thing we need to address is the overpopulation. This is a tough issue to deal with because there is a line where people’s rights are being taken away, if you tell them how many children to have. I think countries should continue to make people aware of family planning.

  4. I think that our national policy toward the environment should be that we need to get better equipment that would produce less emissions so that we would not be destroying our environment. We also need to be helping other countries out by giving them some money and resources so that the world could have less polution every year and maybe in 100 years we might not have any pollution. I agree with Big Boi when he says that we should all come to an agreement that we should reduce our gases because if we don't then our earth is going to end up like the movie "Wallie." The last thing that we should do is that we should be growing our trees in greenhouses, then we should in 5 years plant them and then cut the amound of trees we grew.

  5. I agree with Big Boi that we should take responsibility for our actions because our actions may be affecting other countries and the people living in those countries. I also say that instead of having other countries do research that the United States has already done, the U.S. should send out some scholars, in the area of energy-efficiency, to other countries. These scholars will be sent to these countries to share what we, the United States, have done and how we did it. Also, as the leading producer of energy-efficient technologies, we can’t send much money overseas to help fund because our country is already trillions of dollars in debt and we are trying to reduce this issue as well.

  6. I think that the U.S should not take any new measures to try to help the environment. The only thing I think it should do is raise awareness among our own citizens and around the world. Doing this will make it the peoples’ responsibly. If a company chooses to change to non-carbon fuels or a home chooses to build solar panels, then these would be small steps to helping our environment. The reason I do not think that the government should pay for these changes is because it does not have the money. It needs to focus on getting out of the deficit now. Trying new expensive measures that are not proven to work will not help bring us out of debt. For this reason I disagree with Big Boi. He thinks that the government needs to pay for new environment policies and even help other countries become clean. I do not think we have the money for this. One thing I think we could do is plant trees. This is a very cheap and proven way to reduce on carbon dioxide. By doing this, jobs would be created and carbon emissions would be reduced for a very minimal cost.

  7. The United States should be aware of the amount of greenhouse gasses they are emitting, but the government should not make regulations to limit their emissions. Over the last 20 years, the U.S. has become more energy efficient and reduced the amount of greenhouse gas emissions they give off without any government interference. This proves that the government does not need to intervene.

The United States uses more fossil fuels than any other country, yet limiting their use would affect the whole world. It would hurt the United States’ economy and as a result would hurt the world economy. The United States is developing new energy technologies that may one day replace fossil fuels. This demonstrates that U.S. is trying to become more energy efficient.

In response to Big Boi, I agree it would be wise to replace some power plants with natural gas, hydroelectric, and wind powered energy. This would be helpful in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and make the U.S. more energy efficient. I still think the government does not need to make regulations forcing people to use these new inventions.

  8. I believe that our government needs to continue to monitor the amount of pollutants that the United States is emitting; however, I don’t think that additional government regulation is needed to control these emissions. I believe that current research and regulations are greatly helping the United States control its pollution, and I don’t feel that the government should take on more debt, at this point, to become more energy efficient. The United States is slowly reducing its emissions without changing the system due to the new advancements in technology, many new forms of energy, and the education of people about using the world’s resources wisely.

I agree with Matt that the United States should share their research with other countries to help them become more energy efficient as well. If the main polluters of the world work together to reduce pollution, I believe they could make a bigger difference than just each country working independently.

  9. I agree with saleprice, because it’s very true that we don’t have the money to pay for all of these new technology researches. But I do think that we need to make people more aware of the harm that our gas and other emissions are causing to our environment. I disagree with Barack Obama about giving money and resources to other countries that are in the same environmental problem that we are. This would not really be helpful to our own problem in the U.S. because we don’t have to money to get ourselves out of debt, but now we want to "give money and resources to other countries"? However, I do agree with Big Boi about coming to an agreement. Coming to an agreement will be helpful to the whole world because we would have a goal and keep our emissions down and this would help the environment. Also, another thing that we could do is, like what saleprice said, is plant more trees. This would defiantly help reduce the amount of CO2

  10. I believe that the US should take the role of leadership in starting new ways to help the eviroment. I believe this because the US has the knowledge and the resources to take this role. Other semi-wealthy countries will follow our example in tis matter. Also we need to transfer over from the old methods of gaining energy and start using more energy efficient methods. I agree with mad dawg because God gave us rule over the earth and inhabitants. We also need to be concerned about the emissions that we give off because it will effect future generations.

  11. I agree with Big Boi, the US being the richest, needs to be one of if not the first to take the stand in reducing the slow destruction of our planet by one of the main causes being the "green house gases". So far the US has not held up to our agreement to "take the lead" in the reduction. Some things that the US can do to reduce and really have an impact is: conserving energy, reforestations, and committing to and emissions target by a certain year. And to commit to a target we need to set goals for ourself as a country. Through this we could really make a change in the world and make it a better and safer place to live in.

  12. Our national policy toward the environment should be one of stewardship. I agree with Mad Dawg on the fact that God calls us to have dominion over the earth, and that we need to be responsible in how we treat the earth and its resources. We need to remember that how we treat the earth now will impact generations to come. It would be selfish to use the earth for our own gain, all the while totally disregarding the rights that future generations have to a safe and bountiful earth. Although the U.S. contains only 5% of the world's population, the U.S. emits 25% of the world's total carbon emissions. This sets a bad example for other countries. The U.S. needs to stop relying on fossil fuels by pursuing energy in other areas such as wind, hydroelectric, and possibly even nuclear energy. Everybody in the country has to work toward making our country more energy efficient and mindful of the consequences if we keep on using resources and damaging the environment like we have. Together we can become an example of proper stewardship and raise awareness around the world and institute global change in how the environment is treated.

  13. In my opinion I feel that since the US is one of the richest nations it should take the lead in going green. God calls his people to take care of the environment and be good stewards of his earth. Since the US signed the Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992, we should be held accountable for what we said we would do. I agree with Big Boi that we need to take the lead and start a new trend.

  14. I agree with MDDG on the fact that we should work to reduce our emmissions and be stewards of God's world. I also agree that with him on the fact that we do not need to go into extra debt to solve this problem. The fact is, lots of this conservative technology is expensive to produce, therefore it is expensive to purchase. Many people cannot afford to buy this efficient technology. This puts the government in a worse situation by spending the money to make it. This is why think it is a good idea to work on finding new ways, yet focus on working to find ways to produce technology cheaper yet still efficient. Then people will be more willing to start using the technology. Right now people seem to make this more of a dramatic issue than actually is the case. Yes, emissions do have some affect, but it is not really affecting the climate like many people make it out to be. This is a reason why I do not think we are in big trouble and have to make as many efficient changes as fast as we can.

  15. I agree with Mad Dawg that God wants us to keep his earth clean. we should start using more solar power, wind power, and even nuclear power. We would save more money on the using these energy efficient powers. Also, helping other countries, we should help by giving them knowledge and send people to stop emission. We should NOT give them money because; we ourselves, (United States) are in debt so how could we give them money? As well as, we really don’t know what they will use it for. They say to stop emission but how about if they don’t and we already give them money. We also, should plant more trees. It will help stop the emission as well as give us oxygen. I will have to disagree with Big Boi, maybe the United States is the richest but we are also, we are also, 14,309,373,025,546.69 in debt and continue to increase an average of $4.06 billion per day since September 2007.
