2014 - Immigration

Refer to at least one of the four approaches to immigration policy which we debated in class and explain what you think the U.S.'s overall approach to immigration should be. Then, what you think the U.S.'s approach to creating a path to legal immigration for illegal residents should be. You must incorporate discussion of the Christian perspective article (Loving the Stranger) we read.

  1. I think the best approach to immigration is to lower the amount of visas the US puts out per year, crack down on illegal immigrants living in the US currently, and only allow professional or highly trained foreigners into our country. I think this approach is the most logical one because if we lower the amount of non professional immigrants, then our welfare budget would have more money in it at the end of the year. We can lower the visas when our economy is bad and raise them when we are striving economically. As Christians we have to be active double listeners and make our decisions based off of the Bible... but we have to look at our country's economic state, if we keep letting people in willy nilly, our country will be in an even worse state than it already is.

  2. I agree with option one from the immigration debate because it is the most simple, reasonable, and logical option. Option one says that we should take advantage of immigrants and the culture they bring. Instead of focusing on ways to kick them out of the country and trying to block them from coming in, we should just use them the best we can. It takes so much time, energy, and military forces to keep them out and we waste none of those if we just let them in and let them and further the diversity that is so appealing in America. Arguments against this option include the following: too many immigrants will take over our education and health privileges, terrorists are more likely to invade, and America losing resources. First, a majority of immigrants come to America because they NEED an education and/ or health services because there are no opportunities and/ or health services to get educated and/or treated in their home countries. Americans need education and health services too but we have so many schools and hospitals and teachers and doctors that we have room to let some immigrants come in and learn. Second, I think if we were to close off all borders or immigration checkpoints, other countries would be mad and send in terrorists. Terrorists do not just invade because they can, they invade because they are angry with our country or they want to undermine our country. Third, our resources would be used but if we view immigrants more as a value than a cost, it is not that big of a problem. Immigrants bring diversity and culture and ideas that America lacks and we need them to be the country we are.

  3. Immigration policy, including illegal and legal, is a highly debated issue in the United States. While many different approaches have been considered, we focused on four of those options in class. The first approach we looked at included allowing more immigration and removing bureaucratic obstacles in the path of those looking to become legal citizens. I believe the United States should adopt this policy because we have room to grow and immigration does not directly threaten national security. I also believe the path to legal citizenship should be simplified to promote legal immigration.
One argument supporting this policy is the Biblical standpoint. The Bible often speaks of loving your neighbor and supporting the foreigner. By allowing more immigration, we allow more refugees and those treated unfairly in their own country to enter a safer country with more opportunities.
I agree with Kate when she says “Instead of focusing on ways to kick them out of the country and trying to block them from coming in, we should just use them the best we can.” Immigrants contribute to the economy in a major way by creating a bigger market for producers to sell to and creating jobs through their needs.
The number of illegal immigrants in the United States is currently estimated at 11.5 million. These people are forced to break the law in many ways upon entering the country. Obtaining fake licenses and papers create dangerous drivers and tax evaders. By allowing immigrants easier citizenship, they will be forced to go through the government system , pay taxes, and learn how to drive in our country.

  5. There were four approaches to immigration that we did in class and all of them were different, they include letting anyone come to the U.S., convincing immigrants to stay in their own country, have priorities for those who have better skills, and not allowing immigration at all. The approach that I agree with is letting anyone that wants to come the U.S. come. A few reasons why I agree with this approach are it helps our economy, and it helps our country’s culture grow. The first reason is that it helps our economy. The way it helps is that many of the immigrants have started businesses that help U.S. citizens get jobs. In 2011, 28 percent of the immigrants started businesses that employed one in ten U.S. citizens. Immigrants also boost the tax revenue. On average, immigrants, including those who are not legal, pay almost $1800 more in taxes than they receive in benefits. Just as a random fact, Google and eBay were made by immigrants. The second reason why we should allow immigrants to come to the U.S. is that it helps our culture grow. One of the ways is that immigrants bring along their own culture that can lead to some amazing ideas. They also bring along their cultural foods that America finds delicious. They also bring along their agricultural ideas. Finally, they bring their medical wisdom. To agree or disagree with someone about this will be easy, and I disagree with David. If we crack down on illegal immigrants we lose potential taxpayers. Also we would spend more money looking for them; rather we should let those who came here illegally prove their worth. Plus if we prioritize on skill level there may be those who are escaping for their lives. To finish up, I will quote from the article Loving the Stranger which quoted from the Bible, “The Lord defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.” Deuteronomy 10:18-19. Also don’t forget that we ourselves were immigrants when the Pilgrims came to America.

  6. Immigration in the U.S. has been a widely debated issue for many years. In my opinion, the U.S. should keep their limits on the number of visas and immigrants they allow, and anyone who is legal should be granted the opportunity to come to America not just highly skilled workers. The U.S. should keep limits on immigration so that our country and economy stays stable. I agree with “that third guy” that if the economy is bad the U.S. should decrease the number of immigrants allowed in. If the economy is thriving, they should open those limits a little to let more people experience America. Also, there has to be a balance between the number of jobs being provided by the immigrants and the jobs they are filling. We do not want a whole bunch of people coming to our country and the number of unemployment to go way up.
I think the Dream Act is a good approach to decreasing the number of illegal immigrants in our country. Those who would apply for the dream act have lived in our country for five years or more before it is passed and would know the U.S. as home. Although some of these immigrants would not benefit our country, we must take the risk that more will get good educations and jobs.
As Christians, we should take into account how Jesus welcomed strangers and those who were different. We should accept those who are different and have a different culture and treat them how we would want to be treated.

  7. Immigration is a very widely debated topic among people today. Some believe anyone who wants to immigrate should have that right, some believe immigration should be allowed but limited because it makes a country more diverse, and finally others believe it should be outlawed completely to prevent over population. I believe immigration should be allowed but limited because many problems arise when there is too much immigration occurs and yet other problems arise when it is completely outlawed.
I disagree with “anonymous” because allowing full immigration will potentially increase welfare spending. Our country gives welfare to almost anyone who applies for it which encourages more people to immigrate and get a cut of this money. Also full immigration brings all kinds of different cultures which in turn overrides or takes over the culture of the country they immigrate to. If all the country’s cultures are mixed there will be nothing unique about countries which will make our world “flat”. I disagree with “anonymous” because allowing everyone to immigrate will increase welfare spending and make our world “flat” by mixing all of our cultures.
Even though I disagree with allowing everyone to immigrate that wants to I still think we should help those that do immigrate legally thrive as stated by Mark Glanville in Loving the Stranger. According to Glanville loving the stranger in the Old Testament consists of “the stranger was included within the work and life of the family farm.” This means the stranger was welcomed in the family and provided for. I believe immigration should be limited but not forbidden because it has many pros and cons. However we should provide for those who immigrate successfully.

  8. I think that the best approach is making the majority of immigrant people legal, but not everyone. Immigration has been a major problem in this country as to this day and we might see it as a big problem, but actually it’s not. Let’s put it this way, if will legalize most immigrant people coming to this country, we are providing family’s who have children to get educated, to get a better academic education and be able to go to college and get high skilled in some career and later help out the country in whatever they are skilled in, which benefits the country. Another reason is that Instead of the country wasting millions of money in adding more border patrol and building a wall to stop people from migrating to this country , they should invest all that money, in trying to get youth and kids to go to college and get high skilled and get an education. In Addition i agree with what Anonymous said, it brings diversity and ideas that America lacks and thats what the country needs, that’s what make’s this country special, the diversity of many cultures and ideas.

  10. There are many different opinions on what the US should do concerning Immigration. Some of the main theories include just letting the immigrants come, helping the other countries so that immigration is unnecessary, put many restrictions on immigration so that fewer come, and limiting immigration but making a priority for people that are highly skilled in areas of science or technology or can prove they are coming to study and work in jobs that require a higher level of skill.
I think that the US needs to keep allowing immigrants to come, but make priorities for those who work in the highly skilled jobs. We will still allow the other migrants to come, but the priority is for the highly skilled. The migrants that we will let in will have better jobs and make more money. Since they make more money, they will be able to send more money home to the rest of their family and their old country will benefit since more money is being sent back to support the rest of their families. So, indirectly, we would be helping the other countries economy by making priorities for the highly skilled.
Our country has a rather large illegal population residing here. Many of the illegals have jobs and are helping out our economy, however, there is still a large amount of illegals that only cause problems and bog down our welfare system. I think that our nation needs to make a system that bases jobs and driving/criminal record and helps make some of the illegals legal and kicks out the ones that cause problems.
I agree with Luke when he said that the Bible tells us to love your neighbor and support the foreigner. I think that the Bible is right when it tells us to love our neighbor and support the foreigner. On the other hand, we can't help all of the foreigners so we need to help those who benefit us. The best way to help them is by making them citizens.

  11. Immigration has been debated and negotiated for so many years in our U.S today, and years back. Many people see it as a concern, whereas others believe there is a solution to make it less a problem, and more of a gain. I agree with Kate's statement because our country is still a young and strong country with so much room to grow. If we do everything in our power to keep immigrants out, they will have no other option but to just break the laws and either sneak across our borders, or terrorize our country. We need to stop and remember that not every immigrant attempting to cross will cause our country damage. Our country is known as the "land of opportunity". This inspires many people from all over the world to view our country as a place to be able to call home and fulfill the dreams they have always dreamed of. Although I do not quite agree that every single immigrant should have full freedom to cross, I strongly believe we should provide immigrants with opportunities they have never received like job training, English instructors and have the chance to receive the education every single person deserves and work their way into become an American citizen. They should have to work for this position rather than just get it handed to them. If we do grant them with these opportunities, they will adjust to the American life quicker. Becoming an immigrant is known as a long process and takes years just to become one. I believe if we had a set down law and made it easier to become a citizen, we would not be having so many crimes from immigrants. Since the process is so long to become a citizen, immigrants have no choice but to commit crimes and illegally cross over just to fulfill the dreams and plans they truly desire. The bible states in Exodus 22:21 "You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt." We must love one another and not judge one another just because we come from different countries. We have seen the title "immigration" as a threat for so long, but we have never considered the facts and what our country can actually become. Not only will we receive respect from others across the world, but admiration.

  12. Immigration is a highly debated subject in the U.S. today. In class we looked at four different approaches to immigration. I agreed mostly with option four which was to put restrictions on immigration, but I partly agreed with option one which was to let immigrants come to our nation freely. I believe that the U.S. should let those who want to come here come, but I believe there should be some restrictions. I agree with Kate (anonymous) when she stated, “We should just use them the best we can.” It makes sense to take advantage of those who want to come to America by letting them come and benefit our country, but I also believe that U.S. should keep the number of visas they issue and the number of immigrants they allow to come the same for a couple of reasons. There already is a high unemployment rate. If we allow everyone to come, there is still not going to be enough jobs and we will have even more unemployed people. Also our country does not have a lot of money. A lot of immigrants provide for themselves, but not all can so we will end up providing for those and that lowers the amount of money we have. As Christian we are supposed to love everyone and treat them as we would like to be treated. We can do this by making it easier for those who are already here to become citizens. Annie mentioned the Dream Act in her response and I agree with her that it is a good idea. Most of those who qualify only know the U.S. as their home, so this would make it easier for them to become citizens. Overall, I believe we should love the stranger and treat them like we would want to be treated.

  13. Like any other country in the world today, America owes its roots to those people whom had come from other lands to settle, bringing along with them language, religion and traditions. And like most other countries, its people are protective over who should be allowed to come and settle. Our society is torn on the issue of immigration. Many people feel that migrants should have a chance to live in our country to better for their families and others feel we should cut down almost completely on immigration and be strict on who is allowed to stay.
In class we discussed four different options viewing immigration. In agreement with Luke on option one, I feel we should allow immigration and remove the hardships of becoming a legal citizen away. Migrants would have the capability of going through a simplistic way of becoming a citizen that would also appeal to many illegals living in our country already. They would be given an easier chance to make a living that would benefit our economy in more ways than one.
Another way of viewing immigration is from a Biblical standpoint. Glanville made a point from the Old Testament that we should love the stranger for they were “included within the work and life of the family farm.” Jesus sees us as equal and we should focus on that.
I feel that Immigration is an opportunity to come together from different background and lives to make our country a more diverse and strong nation.

  14. I agree with That Third Guy because lowering our visas and only letting highly skilled workers is the most logical approach. However cracking down and kicking out the illegal immigrants that are already here should be treaded upon lightly and we should be careful about how we go about doing this. This is because some of those illegals provide cheap labor and our willing to do the jobs that most American citizens are unwilling to do. Although I said that illegals provide cheap labor this is not to say the employers are taking advantage of them and being “unchristian like” because the employers still have to pay their workers minimum wage that is set by the government. I think the Dream Act is the best way to go about letting some illegals become citizens because it only lets the illegals that have been here for five years. Plus if they have already have been in America for five years then they obviously already know all the laws because they haven’t been deported yet and if they don’t know all the laws then they would be forced to go through the system and learn them just as Luke said. The Dream Act is the best way of going about the immigration issue and keep it striving for ages to come

  15. STOP. Collaborate and listen. Grace is back with some Christian intentions. Issues grab a hold of me tightly. Talkin' bout immigration daily and nightly.
    (sorry... anyways)
I agree with Annie about the Dream Act being a good thing because a lot of illegal immigrants were brought here when they were younger and had no choice in the matter. In that sense, they really don't belong to either country and that is not their fault. By educating them, we will allow them to give back to our country economically.
Also, I think the U.S. should make it easier for illegal immigrants who are already here to get visas. As of now it is too risky for them file for their papers because there is a greater chance they will get deported.
Instead of just ignoring the problem, or making it impossible for people to immigrate here we need to figure out a way to confront the problem that will benefit all parties involved.

  16. Immigration is one of the most “talked about” topics in our country. In class we had four different approaches toward Immigration. All of the approaches showed different points of view of how we should treat Immigration. After seeing all of the four approaches, I agree with the first option. This option showed that immigrant should be let in into our country freely, without having to go through the hardships of becoming an illegal immigrant. I highly agree with Luke, not only is right with statement that the United States is a country big enough for more people to live in. I really like option one because it benefits not only the United States, but also the native country of the Immigrant. This option makes it simple for all immigrants to become legal, and not only the “highly skilled ones” like option 3 wanted. This country has benefited from immigrants in several different ways like been able to hire them for a cheap labor. The legalization of immigration would help our country become more secure, then having immigrants try to cross the countries border having them risk their own lives and also the lives of our guards.
This point of view of having immigrants come to our country freely is supported biblically. The Bible talks about unity in many different parts of the Bible. God does not only commands us to love our neighbor, but also to help them whenever they need us. As Christians we should do as Jesus did. He helped others, welcomed the strangers. We should act Christ-like. We should accept other people, they bring their culture, share their culture with us, even blend it with our culture, but that is what makes our country unique.

  17. I think this country is called the land of opportunities for reason and that reason is to provide more jobs for the people that needs to. On my class we looked to four approaches and on my group we did option one which is about that we should open ourselves to the world and I highly agree, which means that we should see immigration as a good thing in our country. In my opinion I say is good thing because it makes our culture better and more advance which makes an unique culture not only for us, but also for everybody. Immigration puts our country in touch with the tastes and preferences of consumers worldwide, and gives U.S. companies an edge in opening export markets. One of the arguments on my group were that “America still a young country with a lot of room to grow” I think that’s why today immigrants still coming because they believe United States is the land of opportunities, and recognize that the country rewards hard work and ability like no other country. I say let immigration happen because this is changing our culture to a new one, a more unique one, and also providing more jobs for the ones that are not related with a profession on something. I agree with Kate (anonymous) when she stated “we should use them the best we can” because is true and if we think about it we can use the ones that are smart enough to help ourselves and eve our country. I say let immigration happen because from my own experience they help a lot in agriculture on this town and they were the ones that helped me when I came here.

  18. i agree with scoobie doobie because if we lower or visas and only let the high skilled immigrants would be the best choice. This is because if we let to many immigrants in we could create problems and it would raise taxes and welfare if the cannot become employed. The government should let the highly skilled people to come in because after they become more skilled they could go back to there country and help out there country but they could also stay become legal and help our country out to. if we allow many immigrants they need work so they work for cheap which is nice and they help out. we should not just kick out all the immigrants but they should become legal or educated and become more skilled for duties. The dream act that just came out makes a good point because the parents of the children are illegal but they were brought here when they were young so they had no control. The act is nice because it gives them the chance to become educated and get a job without being deported. Our government needs to come up with a better solution to become legal in our country. The new Arizona law is racial profiling by how the police can just pull someone over because he thinks they are illegal. This was passed and its good and bad by how you view it. It could be racist. So i think the government needs a better way to become legal because this law gives them no chance. But having other cultures and people gives our country different cultures which is nice. I think we need to just keep the immigrants to a lower amount but have different cultures.

  19. I have to agree with Annie on this one. I believe that our country needs to limit the number of immigrants that come over. I strongly believe that if immigrants want to come over they should do it legally. Our country is letting so many illegal immigrants in now that it is just getting too much. They say they want to come to America to have a better life for them and their families and to help our country but they can’t even better their own. If they want to come to America learn the language, want to help build our country up rather than tear it down, and do it legally. Immigrants are a good thing! I just wish they would have the respect toward our country to do it right.
