2014 - Globalization

Do you think our world is becoming “flat”? If so, in what ways? What potential challenges could these changes bring for our future?

  1. Globalization is often thought of as creating a “flat” world in which all people groups are interconnected and easily accessible to each other. In my opinion, our world is becoming “flat” through the use of new technologies allowing easy communication and spread of culture experience, while the loss of unique culture is a potential challenge pertaining to the future.
First, the creation of a flat world is seen through new technologies. Not only can people now interact with each other across the world through cell phones and the internet, but news stories are rapidly sent around the world. If the queen of England were to die, people in America would know within the hour. This creates a general community. Countries feel connected to other countries and are able to help them with any problem they might have.
Second, the spread of culture experience contributes to a flat world. A huge exemplification of this idea has to do with food. I might enjoy an Asian meal at Panda express here in the United States while someone living in Asia might be enjoying an American meal from McDonald’s. Clothing styles and languages have also managed to cross borders all across the world, creating again the feeling of a general community.
While these two ideas may seem benign, the loss of unique culture is a problem to keep in mind. This loss of identity can be seen in an example Mrs. Draayer shared in class. She mentioned Asian natives craving a burger from McDonald’s in order to get a taste of home. Many living on the Asian continent have forgotten that burgers and fries are not part of their culture at all. The globalization of McDonald’s has become so solid that it makes cultures less unique and special to be a part of. Cultures no longer have the awe of when they were first discovered by another people group.

    1. The use of technology in our world today in many ways does give us a "flat" or interconnected look in our different communities around the world. Luke stated many good examples of our different countries coming together and mixing through multinational businesses such as McDonalds and social network's like Twitter and Facebook. People are becoming more and more dependent of technology for information from the outside world. I believe that it is a good thing we are coming together. People can use their resources they have to bring them to other countries that may not have access to. Just like any team sport, we need to try out best to work together for the greater good.

    2. The amount of technology we use in the world is giving us the illusion that we are flat and connected with one another. Yes, although that may seem true, I think a true flat world is one that is physically interconnected as opposed to technologically connected, even though being technologically connected is an aspect that helps. Our world, I think is very much on its way to becoming completely flat. We are (as Luke said) becoming culturally intertwined with things like sports, food, lifestyle etc. I personally think we have done everything we can to become a flat world, it will just take time.

  2. Well, that is a good question but I would have to say that our world is, in a sense, becoming flat. The ways that show that it is becoming flat are by our communication with eachother and by our cultures colliding. By communication the Internet has come up with social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram which helps countries all around the world communicate with eachother. There are even sites that are strictly for countries just to communicate and give there opinions on events or ideas, an example of such a site would be Epals. The other way is by many different cultures clashing and mixing to help spread their beliefs. For instance, there are all kinds of missionaries that dedicate their life to help spread the Good News of Jesus and there are lots of people that volunteer to go to other countries for a brief period to help out there, kind of like what our church does. Now about the challenges that might arise, I do not really see how any challenges could come up other than the fact that communication could be cut off at a future point and the lack of communication between countries might cause trust issues but other than that our world is definitely going flat.

  3. I do agree with Nathan on how the world is becoming more globalized through communication through there are a lot of people that have cell phones and computers that have internet. People can go on the internet and can see what other people are saying about things and how people do and what their culture is. What someone has to do is just search for something that has to do with people’s culture and they can find that on the internet. Other reason I could add to his reason through public transportation. The main public transportation is the airports. People from all over are traveling in air planes and everybody talks, looks, and dresses differently. Through these things someone can see how that person’s that culture dresses, and talks. Another way the world is becoming more flat is how restaurants from one county is becoming popular different countries. So, yes I do believe the world is becoming more globalized through the internet and technology, and also through public transportation.

  4. Our world is gradually becoming more and more connected or "flat". Because of technology, people all around the world have the capability to connect and communicate through computers and cell phones. Social media sites are open to everyone and many people from all over the world can read posts about others within seconds of them happening. I think cultures are still distinct, but because of the easy ability to travel and move, many cultures or lifestyles are mixing. Through media and entertainment, people are able to easily understand and learn about other's cultures rather than only understanding their own. Yet, I do not think our world will become completely "flat". Because there are so many countries with different languages and cultures, I do not think all cultures will be lost and everyone will be connected through technology.

One challenge that may arise with globalization is that people become so involved with other people's lives and ideas, they forget their own life and the people around them are just as important. People spend so much time checking one another’s posts on Facebook or Twitter they don't realize that they should be building relationships with those they interact with everyday. For example, instead of teenagers sitting down for dinner or playing a game with their family, many teenagers are on their phones looking up other people's activity and lives. In response to Luke’s comment, I agree that unique cultures are in many ways being lost. Food, clothing, and lifestyles are mixing rapidly and historical culture is being lost.

  5. Is the world becoming flat? I think that is a good question and i think that it is becoming flat. There are many examples of this but i think that some of the best are the fact that we are capable of connecting with any overseas country in just a matter of seconds due to the technology we have. Another huge thing that shows this is the spread of food and cultures.
There are so many different types of social networking and communication that it could make your head spin. Internet has only gotten faster and faster. These things combine and give people the ability to connect with any person they want from almost wherever they want. The ability to rapidly connect to other places gives people the ability to share their cultures and ideas very easily. I do agree with what Ethan Zuckerman said though, that even though people have the ability to access foreign ideas, they don't. They can still choose to only look at local or national news thus hurting the case for globalization. I still think that their is enough data transfer to be a valid point for the case of globalization.
Today's cultures are heavily influenced by other cultures that it is like one big melting pot of styles. Brad Paisley has a song out that basically sums up what we were talking about. The song is “American Saturday Night” and it just talks about going out on a saturday night and all of the foreign influence there is in America. There is one line that basically has the same point of my argument, “It's like were all livin' in a big ol' cup Just fire up the blender, mix it all up.” I agree with what Luke said, “I might enjoy an Asian meal at Panda express here in the United States while someone living in Asia might be enjoying an American meal from McDonald’s.” Panda Express has gained popularity here just like McDonalds has gained a lot of popularity in Asia. The world used to have distinct cultures but now it is like we are in a blender with all of the sharing of ideas that has occurred.

  6. While I agree with Luke that social media is making it easier for people and countries to communicate, I do not believe the whole world is becoming "flat". I think other countries are much more globally oriented now than they used to be. The news in other countries focuses on what is happening in the rest of the world, through advances in teaching strategies their students become fluent in two or more languages before they graduate high school, and they attend colleges in other countries. It is for these reasons I believe that much of the world has become "flat".
Now compare this to what is happening in the United States. Our news centers solely around what is happening within our country. The majority of the high school graduates are only proficient in one, occasionally two, languages. And very few of these high school graduates actually attend foreign universities, some will participate in study abroad programs, but those only last about a semester at most. Americans have an ideological view of our country. In general we are close minded and believe that everyone wants to be American. And maybe this is because we are one of the last true empires, or because we have the second largest economy in the world. I don't know. But this ethnocentric view we have is not allowing us to participate in the globalization that is taking place in the rest of the world.

  7. I believe that our world is becoming more “flat.” Throughout the world, more and more barriers are being overcome. Within minutes, we can communicate with people across the world. I agree with Luke how he said that all different people groups are interconnected and accessible to each other. These days, most people have cells phones and can talk with anyone. Also most people have access to the internet. With things like Facebook and Skype, it is becoming easier to communicate with other people all around the world. Since people can communicate easier, it is becoming easier to share ideas and cultures. America has become a mixture of races and cultures. In most towns, you can see several different cultures combining. In Sunnyside, you have the option of several different Mexican, Chinese, and American restaurants. As we read in class, McDonald’s is in lots of countries besides the U.S.A. Besides food, there are lots of other ways that different cultures mix and become globalized. The only challenge that I can see if our world becomes more globalized is that we will become too interconnected. If we become too interconnected it would be harder to stay out of other countries problems and it could lead to things like war. Overall I think our world is becoming “flat.”

  8. The ability to interchange world views, products, ideas, and cultures are all effects of globalization. This is why our world could be considered as “flat”. Domestic and national markets spread to other markets around the globe thereby increasing the interconnectedness of different markets. A example of this would be a shirt made in a cotton factory in Thailand that is then sent to the United states on a French freighter with a Spanish crew. Many business entrepreneurs have the opportunity to develop trade connections in a universal market. The internet is a major contributor to globalization. I have the ability to speak to my cousin in Mexico over Facebook with only a click of a mouse. In April of 2012, the number of active Facebook members passed 900 million, with 80% of them located outside of North America. People thousands and thousands of miles only need access to a computer to communicate. Global news networks such as CNN also communicate information all around the world. Globalization has increased not only in international trade and information, but also as a cultural exchange. An example of this would be the Silk Road. The Silk Road ran through China and the Mediterranean Sea area that did not only brought goods, but knowledge and culture throughout the Middle East. A recent example of Globalization would be the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia this February. Though started in Ancient Greece, people from all around the world still have the ability to come to one place and play sports together. As you can see, there are many examples of Globalization in our past and present. We must try our best to keep this connection between peoples to advance in the future.

  9. Is the world becoming flat? I believe that the world is becoming flat in some ways, with all of these cultures mixing together but parts of the world is not. China Town California is a good example of how cultures mix, where there is Asian culture mixing in with our culture. Another way that the world is flat is like McDonalds, it is spread throughout the world selling food that Americans eat every day. Ways that the world is not becoming flat is like in the parts of the world that do not have any contact with the outside world. Places like in parts of china where they do not have any technology and they live like they did many years ago, and places in Africa where they do not have the technology to talk to other people. These places cultures are not mixing, there for the world is flat in some ways but not in all places

  10. You’re all wrong. The world is staying as an oblate spheroid as it ever was. Sure more people are connecting through the internet and Facebook than ever be before but the majority of people only use this technology to communicate with people within their country. I mean when was last time (excluding family members) you talked to some one in another country? The way I see it we see pictures and videos from other countries and then we put our own unique spin on their ideas. Take Japanese game shows for example; Japanese game shows are very popular but when we (Americans) try to copy those game shows there are nothing close to the Japanese ones. Also everyone is talking about how McDonalds, Starbucks, and Nike are globalizing the world but your forgetting even though these companies are huge their just three in a sea of other companies, American and non American. There will always be local companies in all countries making their products spreading their own unique culture. An example of this would be right here in good old America where there more and more making products that say made in USA for people in America. So as you can clearly see the world is not becoming more flat.

  11. I believe that the world is becoming “flat” these days. Technology has a big part of this happening. Technology allows us to communicate more easily and more efficiently. Cell phones and computers are the two biggest technology devices that allow us to do so. With a cell phone you may call a person in seconds and are able to talk to them. Computers allow you to do almost anything. With a click of the mouse you are also able to see anything. You are able to look up different religions, people around the world, events that are happening in the world, and so much more. This also allows us to mix cultures. We are then able to understand what different cultures are about and learn about them. I’m not saying that it is bad to learn about other cultures and understand them and be interacted with them, I’m just saying that we should be careful with what we get into with different cultures. Cultures and countries still have different languages, religion, and traditions that they do and we can’t learn them all. With that said I believe the world is becoming flat but isn’t going to become completely flat.

  12. I agree with luke, our world is becoming flat because of all the new technologies we have now. Like luke said all people are interconnected and easily accessible to each other. We can share news within minutes of it happening. Having access to the internet we can look and interact with other countries and there cultural ideas. We still have different cultural ideas but since we have the internet other countries can get an idea of what we have. Since we have easy access to the internet we can share our cultural ideas and mix it all up like alex said. I also agree with ian about how many facebook members there are in the world. Having that many people on a social media we can easily have connection with them and find ideas out. The internet can be a bad thing because it can take away our own life and we put so much focus on facebook we do not do anything with our life.
With all these cultures blending together we become more blended because there will not be any distinct differences in each country culture. Just like how McDonalds is here but also it is all over worldwide. The trades we make with clothing we can have the same types of clothes as someone in china or some other place.

  13. Is the world becoming flat? I agree with Ian, Domestic and national markets spreading to other markets around the globe thereby increasing the interconnections of different markets. For example Microsoft is a huge market place around the world, u can find the newest technology anywhere u go and its technology has spread at every corner of this world and it's very well known to the public. Another example is internet like Ian said, people use that to interact and stay in touch with family and friends where ever you go and are capable can talk to long distance family members like in other countries or states. There are many factors that prove that the world has become flat and it has slowly been changing threw out the years and some of these factors are for the good and some are not but that's how life is.

  14. I believe that our world is becoming “flat” very quickly. I agree with shaylon and luke. Not only is social media a way that people from countries across the world can communicate, but also mail and telephones. Maybe these two methods are not as quick as the new advanced technology, but they do have the same outcome. Throughout the years, our world has become more advanced with technology. If we go a couple of years back, the only ways of communication were mail and telephones. These two ways, were very effective and popular. The new technology keeps becoming more advanced as years go by. This makes it simpler for people to communicate from one country to another across the world. It is possible to share something on facebook or twitter, and in less than a minute your friend from across the world sees it. Just as Annie said, even cultures and lifestyles are mixing because of the easy ability that they have to move and travel fast. We can see many examples of this in our own country and town, because it is easy for us to find restaurants and stores that are not American not far from where we live. There is people on our town from different countries and cultures, but because they are here, they share their lifestyle with us. Our world is becoming more and more “flat”, the distinction between places cannot be seen easily because all cultures are blending together.

  15. The following post is from Kailyn ...
I personally do believe our world is becoming flat. Luke's response is fairly because if you think about it, everything in our world is changing, there used to be Pangea which we once considered a "supercontinent". This began falling apart 200 million years ago and it covered up 1/3 of our planet. The change is those continents are now separate. In his blog he shared the example Mrs. Draayer provided in class about Asian natives having a certain want for McDonald's just to get a taste of home. With the use of technology, we are growing more and more each day. We are able to indicate international news and when and if we were to be in danger, the news would spread virally; this is because of international communication. Whenever a country is heading downhill or a tragic event occurs, it is automatically shared among the world and we are able to donate and help in many ways. The reason to the world being flat is language. With all the languages across the globe, many people are learning more than one to fit into society better and be able to be a part of many opportunities like traveling and getting a good job. With the learning of language, we grow closer and are able to communicate on a whole different level, and grow together rather than falling apart. We use the learning of the language in our ways with using technology as well. How you may ask, is through communication, and actually being able to communicate and understand one another, this not only brings us closer together, each and every one of us are able to share information and our own current events.

  16. 1 / 1I agree that the world is becoming flat or globalized due to technology, specifically the internet, being available to almost anyone in every country. However, I don’t think this is a bad thing for our world. Though we may lose a sense of identity through the world being “flat” or globalized,it also gives us a common language, diet, and many other things that can benefit people today. As quoted by Luke Wavrin, “Cultures no longer have the awe of when they were first discovered by another people group.” However, is having the “awe of when discovered” more important than being able to communicate with others around the world so we can help each other solve common problems? Does it have any real important value to humans or could having things in common possibly save lives because we are able to communicate with those in need due to a standardized language created by the internet? Standardizing the world is a good thing for the world because we can communicate with each other and help each other solve common problems

  17. I do believe the world is becoming "flat" because for example the internet is a big part of globalization. Before the 21 of November of 1969 when the internet was created people could work at anything because today if you don't have internet you cannot work at all. For example doctors are able to do their records at home because of their internet and a computer but if we look back they had to probably write those records down. Technology is really taking over on this world like for example a cellphone. Cellphones are also taking a big responsibility in why the world is becoming flat because think back when there was no cellphone and you probably will wonder how people use to communicate before there was a cellphone? and today having a cellphone is big deal since you can talk to whoever you want all around the world and everybody now has one or wants one because they are getting better at technology specially when they have sites like Facebook. In the 4 of February of 2004 Facebook was created and a few weeks ago i got to know that when facebook was created only college students could have it and today every body can have one because is a public site and also helps to communicate and of course it has gone global like any other sites. if i have to agree with someone it will be Ian in that the Internet has become a major contributor in globalization because if we look back when we were kids where there was no Iphones or Ipads our entertainment was on common toys and now if you go to an elementary school you can hear them talking about snapchat or instagram or facebook or twitter and in my opinion this haven't only become global but also in some people culture because in the ways you can see little kids playing around with an Ipad or anything that is connected to technology or internet. In my opinion we are our own globalization because we are able to control all this kind of stuff and all this lead me to one question Is the world changing for better or for worse?

  18. I believe the world is becoming “flat” because there are almost no limits to the connections we have to people around the world. With the technology we have today, we can text, email, call, video chat, and many other types of communication with people everywhere. The only limits we have are basically bad service or bad reception. The world is becoming more and more flat because technology is advancing further and further. Not only can we communicate with people around the world but we can also visit people thanks to planes, boats, cars, trains and other types of transportation. Means of transportation are also advancing and getting more efficient.
