What should the government do about immigration?

  1. I feel that immaigration needs to be controlled. It is getting out of hand. the government should drop the healthcare and use that money to increase border control.

  2. I think that the government should slow down and increase border control. Yes this can and might put us more in debt, but we are already really far in debt and have we really done much to get us out/keep us out of debt? By increasing border control, it forces people to get legal citizenships. However, immigrants have helped our economy because the immigrants are willing to work the jobs that Americans are not willing to work.
In response to 8ball-I don't think we should "drop" healthcare, but maybe reduce it a little bit.

  3. I believe that the government should make it very hard for the illegal immigrants to prosper finically in our country because our government does not have the money to be supporting them. In 2005, the United States started doing this by passing the Real ID Act. This required all states to make citizens get drivers licenses. This way, if you were not a citizen, you could not receive one. We could also not allow illegal residents to receive government help, free schooling, or jobs. They would also be required to pay taxes. These requirements would not make people want to come to the U.S. I agree with swimmer that we should also increase the border patrol. The government stated doing this in 2006 when money was given to enforce a stricter border control.

  4. I think to this question "What the government should do about immigration” there are several pros and cons to this. As 8ball said,” I feel that immigration needs to be controlled". That is one of the pros for having government have more said in how to regulate the foreigners coming in to the United States. And also to response in what swimmer said, I think even with putting the government more in debt for having more border control. It won’t matter because the United States will never be out of debt. Which could be either counted as a pro or a con either way you take it. One more pro is immigrants’ help out places like Sunnyside, Washington for agriculture purposes.

  5. I partially agree with both of you. I disagree that we should drop healthcare. If we stop illegal immigrants then there will be less people abusing healthcare. What to do with illegals that are here now, I don't know. Probably the best solution would be to deport them. But that's another issue. In conclusion, lock down border control and our debt will decrease as less money is going out to poor immigrants etc...

  6. I disagree with 8ball and I personally think that imigration is the core of our economy. Without all the imagrants to work in agriculture our nation would be in more debt. I think its ok for illegal imagrants to be hear because they pay for things with the money taken out of there checks for social sequrity and those people will never see that money so they are some what helping social security in ways but hurting welfare in other ways.

  7. I disagree with 8ball. I do not think that getting rid of healthcare would be beneficial. That will cause more damage than good. If Americans do not have access to healthcare, then disease will run rampant and our society will crumble. I feel that immigration is a good thing, but immigration to excess will be detrimental. Having people of various backgrounds and cultures will benefit our society. It will provide us with the best and brightest people from other countries and this will enrich our society and our economy. It will enrich our society because it will give our culture a mixture of the best things from other cultures. Having people from other countries will also open doors to trade with other countries. On the other hand, having too many immigrants will make Americans the minority and our culture will lose its identity. Also, too many people will lead to fewer jobs more, crowded facilities and a raise in taxes to supply services to all these people. This is why I feel we should still make an effort to control our borders, but not spend too much money on it.

  8. 8ball: If we were to drop healthcare we will be taking from those who really are in need of it. When we here healthcare or welfare or anything that involves help from the government, we think "oh well they don't work for what they need they just take advantage of the help and are taking our money". When really there are some people who genuinely are in need of help in hard times, especially ones like now. So I dont think we should stop the healthcare because it is not just immigrants in need of help there are U.S. citizens who also in need, do we really want to take away from those who are needing help?

saleprice: I agree with the whole making in hard to prosper here, because if they are going to come in to have a better life, go through with it. Most of the immigrants coming in dont go through with bettering their lives instead they depend on us to bale them out. And they go off on how they want to be treated equal when they are slacking and using our money, if they want to be equal then they to put in the same kind of work and effort that we give to make our lives the way they are.

My opinion: With immigrants coming in it is hard to become a citizen which leads to people sneaking in and becoming illegal which is affecting our country financially and the last thing our country needs is to have more financial debt added on. We need a strict boarder control to stop those coming in illegally. And when it comes to those trying to come legally we need to keep the same process of becoming a citizen, but when they are coming in they need to have jobs set up, know what they are going to be doing, we should not let them in if they are going to have zero work experience and end up in deep need of our help. We should let those in who are going to benefit us in all areas, and not pull our government and economy down into more financial problems.

  9. I agree with swimmer that we should provide less funding for the healthcare bill, which would save our government money. With this money we could increase border patrol and prevent terrorists from getting into the U.S. We should also make the legalization process easier, and then these immigrants will pay taxes. Although I do think that the illegal immigrants benefit our economy by working on the farms and taking the jobs that most Americans won’t take, but some of them are also abusing healthcare and not paying taxes. This is why I think the legalization process should be easier and we should stop the illegal immigrants.

  10. I disagree with 8-ball that the government should drop healthcare. I don’t think this is the answer to the problem of immigration. I do agree with him, however, that the government needs to step up and take control of illegal immigration. Illegal immigration helps our economy in some ways because it provides workers, but it also hurts the economy because they take American’s jobs and take advantage of healthcare, social security, and educational services. This raises the debt of the United States. If the government doesn’t slow immigration, more than 25% of the US population will consist of foreigners. I believe that the government needs to further secure the border and deport foreigners who are violating their visas. I believe the government should also help people become legal US citizens. As soon as immigrants are legal, they can pay taxes and then rightfully receive the benefits given to US citizens.

  11. I believe that the government should be stricter with their boarder control. I also think that no matter what the government does to try to control immigration, people from other countries will find a way to get into the United States. The government has proposed many acts that have tried to reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the country. I agree with Saleprice when he said that the Real ID Act was a positive enforcement. This act made it so that only legal people could apply for a driver’s license. I think this was a positive action to make it difficult for illegal immigrants to survive in our country. Also, in May 2006, the senate passed a movement that made the border patrol stricter. In response to Fredrick Bothelhousen, I do not believe the solution to reduce the amount of illegal immigrants is to deport them. In the United States, 14% of the working force is foreign-born. If we deport all of the foreign-born workers, many jobs like agriculture and manufacturing will suffer because of the lack of willing and able bodies.

  12. The government should try to restrict immigration. They need to protect our country, both economically and from terrorists and other threats. If too many illegals come in, they will flood the job market and strain our social services. Also, they need to increase border patrol and monitor foreign arrivals, such as they started to do by way of the Patriot Act and the US-VISIT act. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the government realized that they needed to protect themselves and the American people from such threats and enforce immigration restriciton and security. I agree with Mad Dawg: the government should try to control our borders, but they should not spend too much money on it. Our government is hopelessly in debt, so they should not go even farther into debt. However, they still need to keep the safety of the citizens in mind and make provisions to preserve the rights American citizens have to a healthy economy with jobs and freedom from living in fear of terrorism.

  13. I think that the government should put more money on protecting the border so that we have no illegal immigration. Also I Agree with 3 6 mafia because if we didn't have illegal immigrants then our economy would end up in debt and everyone would have to be forced into bankruptcy because everyone relies on them. We should raise taxes so that they have enough money to protect the borders. The last thing that we should do is lower welfare that way we would have more of our people working and getting the jobs done.

  14. I agree with 8ball. He seems to be on the ball. I don't know if we have to spend more money to step up the border patrol. We just have to be smarter about it. The border needs to have punishments for those who cross illeglly. Maybe if we do something like this then the illegals will think twice about coming.

  15. The government should do is have more control on immigrants. I agree with 8ball. We should take out welfare or give it to people who actually really need’s it. They would need the right paper work and have them renew it every five years. This would save our country a lot of money. We do need to have more control on the borders because we don’t want to have anymore terrorist’s attacks. I disagree with swimmer about the debt. Swimmer said “… we are already far in debt and have we really done much to get us out/keep us out of debt?” I know we are in debt but we have to start somewhere to try to get out.

  16. I partially agree with 8 ball and 3 6 mafia. I think that immigration does need to be controlled but illegal immigrants also greatly influence the agricultural community. I think that we need to find a median that allows us to control our borders while allowing more legal immigrants that can help our economy grow out of its depression. If we could get less illegal immigrants coming across the border and being supported by our government, then we could use the extra money to put in our government and lock down on the borders. Also, if we made it easier to become a citizen or obtain a visa, then it would also help our economy because they would pay taxes and work in agricultural jobs. As for the illegal citizens currently in America, we should deport them.
